Truckers are fighting back against "crash for cash" cheats by fitting cameras in their cabs.

They hope the £199 devices will thwart fraudsters who cause life-threatening shunts to get insurance payouts.

Dodgy prang claims currently run to £4million a day and add at least £40 to the cost of average insurance policies.

But the iPhone-sized cameras, which are fitted to lorry windscreens, could nail hundreds of conmen. Chrys Rampley, of the Road Haulage Association, said: "Before now it's been very hard to decipher whether a haulier caused a crash or not - but this kind of footage can prove their innocence straight away.

"It's an excellent idea several of our members are already using and it's only going to get more popular with time."

Several insurers now offer free CCTV cameras with truck policies.
