The Icelandic volcano eruption continues to wreak havoc for airlines and passengers alike not only closing UK airspace but most of Europe too. Spain is the latest country to close its airspace at 18.00 GMT today Sat 17th April. Thousands of passengers remain stranded throughout the world with airlines cancelling all flights to the UK indefinitely.

Experts predict that the eruptions from the volcano could last up to two years although the severity of the amount of ash blasted into the atmosphere is not known, the Dutch airline KLM is thought to have tonight sent a jet up into the ash to assess and consider the implications of flying in the stuff. Hundreds of thousands of passengers are stranded, trains and ferries to mainland Europe are unable to take further bookings due to the sheer volume of passengers trying to get home or away. Fruit growers in Africa and Brazil are facing worthless crops has aircraft are now unable to get their goods to the UK, companies such has TNT & Fedex with their own aircraft are unable to get deliveries in or out of Europe and in many cases unable to move urgent medical supplies and equipment around.

Is this affecting you in any way ?

Err..... Yes! If Im working on a weekend then I am exclusively on Imp/Exp Airfreight. I thought I would be doing next to nothing (But still paid in that nice British way of course!!)
B.A were full so we didnt have much joy there, but most the other sheds were still taking stuff in, except for the obvious perishables that would just sit around and start smelling or dying urrgghh! .
Those in the know in Air Cargo (Not me!) think two more days and it will really come to a halt when everyone reaches capacity. The option of transfering Cargo by road into mainland Europe was suggested on Friday, but with the Ash also spreading right across W.Europe now, thats also a no no,... (so no nice dashes across there!)
But it was certainly surreal around Heathrow with an eerie silence, but certainly safer driving around without the Taxi, minicabs and lost drivers

Not right now, but the long term implications are severe. My youngest son (21) has a job offer over here & was hoping to fly out to meet his prospective employers. Not now he isn't.

I suppose the M20 is a parking lot again?
